Summary

Sophia Rabe-Hesketh is a Professor of Educational Statistics and Biostatistics at the University of California, Berkeley. She was previously Professor of Social Statistics at the Institute of Education, University of London and Reader in Statistics at the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London.

She is an applied statistician in the areas of social statistics, biostatistics and psychometrics. Her research interests include missing data, multilevel modeling, longitudinal data analysis, and latent variable modeling. Sophia developed a general modeling framework (see GLLAMM below) and software to estimate the models. She is also involved in many collaborative projects in education, psychology, and medicine.

Sophia's publications include 6 authored books, 109 peer-reviewed articles in over 60 different journals, and 14 book chapters. Her h-index is 38 in the ISI Web of Science (56 in Google Scholar), meaning that her 38 most-cited papers have each been cited at least 38 times. For full lists of publications and citations, see: ResearcherID and Google Scholar.

She is the President of the Psychometric Society, a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute. Sophia is a former co-editor of Statistical Methods in Medical Research and of the Chapman & Hall/CRC book series Statistics in the Social and Behavioral Sciences and currently serves as on the technical advisory committees for the U.S. National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

GLLAMM

Generalised Linear Latent And Mixed Models (GLLAMM) are a general class of multilevel latent variable models. The framework unifies and extends generalized linear mixed models, multilevel factor and item response models, multilevel structural equation models, and latent class models. Sophia has written a Stata program, gllamm, to estimate these models as part of joint work with Anders Skrondal and Andrew Pickles. Since 2002, the program has been used in over 1,000 peer-reviewed papers in over 700 different journals by researchers in education, sociology, political science, economics, medicine, and statistics. Click here to find out more or to download the gllamm program files.
